Blogger's Quilt Festival

This quilt is called Bubble and Squeak and I made it a couple of years ago when I was into a clean up my scrap pile stage.

If you look closely at the individual blocks you will see that they appear to be crazy patchwork style but this is not correct.  In actual fact the blocks are made using an improvised four patch technique which I have been utilising quite a bit lately as it is perfect for when I feel like doing brainless sewing and when I want to use up scraps.

If only I could throw out unwanted fabric it would make life so much easier.

The leftover scraps were randomly sewn together  to form large pieces of fabric which was then cut into the squares and rectangles.  Unfortunately I was a bit brain dead at the time that I started to cut and didn't allow correctly for seam allowances which is why most blocks have a double border on two sides.. never throw out an error when you have a chance to experiment as they say.  It is one of my favourite quilts.

If you want to try the technique I have used it in two projects which are being featured in Australian Patchwork and Quilting. The first was in last month and the project was called Dusting Crumbs and the other will be in a few months in a project called Starry Cabins. Dusting Crumbs uses a few different improvisational techniques whereas Starry Cabins only uses two.

  2. What a fabulous quilt. It looks totally improvisational despite having a pattern. I have the same problem with being unable to throw out any scrap of fabric, no matter how small.

  4. A colourful quilt Cinzia and a good way of using all the pieces in the scrap bag.

  5. Oh Cinzia, I love your name.
This quilt is so beautiful. I especially like how you added the double border to each block in order to "save" it. I believe that all errors are really just teachers in disguise.

  6. I make many blocks from my leftovers and when you get a quilt from them you feel so--well practical! I'm like you, as I hate to throw away scraps. The colors and the placement within your quilt works very well. Congrats!

  7. What a great way to use up all those scraps! I would not have caught on to your "mistake" if you had not pointed it out. I love the borders/sashin--they really add to the quilt.

  13. I understand what you mean about brainless activities. I use quilting as a way to retain who I am and my sanity. While I am the midst of going to college full time and being a wife and mother.
Even though this type of quilt is brainless it turns out to be a fantastic colorful quilt.
