Quiltmaker Blog Tour - My Big Day

Well the blog tour is off and running.  There are lots of wonderful prizes to be won.  As a starting point check out Quilty Pleasures blog first and leave a comment for a chance to win a prize.  Every day there will be a selection of different prizes so don't forget to return daily.
Also on that blog you will find a link to the day's featured blogs which also have prizes up for grabs.  This is going to be a great week for anyone surfing.

Here, as promised is a photo of my quilt made using my block Khanam's Surprise. As I said previously my machine pedal has died and I am awaiting replacement so I haven't had a chance to add the borders to add the borders to finish it off.
My quilt also extends further than the photo but the shadow effect was so drastic I had to cut it out... I'm glad I don't make a living as a photographer.

Some of my other designs may be seen on my website Cinzia White Designs. There is even a photo of a qult I designed using a variation of my block, Isobel's Flight, from the last issue of QM 100 Blocks.  I can't wait to see the finished quilt which Isobel has made and will be hanging at the next NSW Qulit Show in Sydney in June.

The block design is a compilation of designs from some  mosques.  I was actually working on a third design which I preferred but it wouldn't work and this one suddenly fell out.  The name came from my son's girlfriend Khanam and the fact that when she sees it she will be surprised.  I am sending her a magazine as a gift and haven't told either of them about it.

Quiltmaker is providing one copy of the magazine to someone who enters my 'competition', which is simple enough.. you have the choice.... any one of the following three actions will give you an entry into the competition.
1.  what do you think would be a good name for this quilt?
2. what kind of border do you think would suit this quilt the best?
3. or simply leave your name.

Although the winner will be chosen by random number generator I would dearly love help with the naming and/or border design of this quilt.
btw if you don't happen to win a copy of the magazine you can always order one from here if your local newsagent doesn't get it in.  Don't leave it too long as the first issue is totally sold out.  Also if, like me, you prefer digital versions you can order that from the same place... I don't think they are available from the newsagents... well definitely not from my little old newsagent.

  3. Field of daisies and stars. So original, I know. I love it. But I think your name is very sweet naming it after your son's girlfriend. I love the block.

  4. I love the eternal interlocking shapes from Islamic art. This is a fascinating block, Cinzia - one that I am itching to hand piece!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Oh, I love this block. It looks to me like Happy Starflowers.Congratulations!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Love your petal rectangular block ~ quite floral too. The blocks go together for a great quilt. I would add some of the triangle/diamond shapes as part of the border design.

    ReplyDelete
  7. The first thing I thought of was a dandelion, so maybe something wth dandelion in the title, Dandelion Wheel?? Dandelion Star??
Good luck with it, looks great

    ReplyDelete
  8. What a beautiful block! I would add a rather simple border using the pointy shapes from the centre.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Really like the block. So many secondary patterns when you show them all together. Congratulations.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Beautiful block. I would continue the eight point stars that form when the blocks are joined into the border.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think your block and quilt are wonderful! I think that Pathway to Heaven, would be a nice name.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wonderful giveaway and opportunity to win a really great book. Love your block and my name would be Daisie's In the Wind. Judy C

  14. What a beautiful design! Love the movements in the quilt. How about "Mosaic Illusions"?? Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  15. What a great block! And a perfect scrap buster. How sweet you named it after your son's gf. I think a simple border, maybe 3" wide in red would look really nice. It's so busy and fun, it just needs something simple to finish it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wow! Love the quilt! No idea for a name, but it is beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  17. It reminds me of the grand finale in a fireworks show. Maybe you should name it "Jubilee."

    ReplyDelete
  18. When I first looked at the quilt I thought of sunflowers. Interesting how we each see something different.

    ReplyDelete
  19. WOW is all I can say! that's a marvelous block! wish I could figure out how to deconstruct it. I'll have to win just so I can learn how to put it together. great job! nelfamily at windjammercable dot net

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh, I LOVE this block. I would probably put a soft applique border on it to break up the angularity of the block, but that's just me!

    ReplyDelete
  21. congrats!
such an interesting block. I love how the quilt turned out.
I would call it Ferris Wheel. It is the first thing I thought of when I saw it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm not good at coming up with creative names for quilts. So, I'm going to answer #2 with a "plain" border framing the quilt itself out so that it will not look too busy. :-)

Thank you for a chance to win. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I also saw a flower field and I think I would not add a border but just bind it and let the flowers speak. It's a fabulous quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The quilt makes me think of stars in the galaxy. How about Star Explosion or Our Galaxy? I'm not too adventurous, so I would probably do a plain border or one with a variety of the fabrics used in the quilt.

  25. love the way your block fits together in pattern with another block. clever.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi congratulations on your block it is awesome...My first thought was "StarGlitz" because I just love how the star is surrounded...
    Sharon

    ReplyDelete
  27. I would use a solid or tone on tone in brown for the border. I really like your block.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love your design. The first things that came to mind were swirling mosaics or life go round because there's so much movement in the design. Just lovely!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Great block and congrats on being put into the new book!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wheel in Motion. thank you for the opportunity to win a copy of the magazine.
    Mary

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wow! I really like your quilt top! The secondary patterns are very striking! I'm not very creative this morning and can't think of a name. Maybe later I'll post my thoughts on that.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The quilt is beautiful. I think it should stand alone. Simply bind it. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of the magazine.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow,such a beautiful pattern! I would have to play around with it to decide for sure what kind of border I would use, but my first thought would be wedge shaped pieces using the colors that are in the quilt. Not sure if that would be too busy or not. If it was, then a plain solid border using one of the colors from your quilt. I am sure you will be able to figure that one out since you came up with such a beautiful design.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wow! Your block is so striking. I would have to stare at the quilt for a while before coming up with a name although I like the idea of using your son's girlfriend's name.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Kind of reminds me of spokes in a wheel. names are too hard for me, if I come up with one, if feels like I have solved world peace. I really like it tho, and it will be one on my "list" for sure. (As so many are...)that is one problem with these block mags...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Love your pattern. Looks great for scrappy, which is what I do most.

My first thought for a name is, "What Goes Around Comes Around.

Thanks for the chance to enter.

    birdthaing@hughes.net

    ReplyDelete
  37. I would try to extend only the large stars from the secondary design into the border using the same fabric. And I would choose a neutral fabric for the rest of the border. Naming it after your son's girlfriend is a nice gesture.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The more I look at the block, the more it fascinates me. The two interlocking designs are wonderful. The first name that popped into my head was Daisy Chain - it looks like row after row of flowers. Love it!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. WOW!!! This is an amazing block & even more stunning when put together. The secondary design that emerges is fantastic! I can't wait to get the instructions for this block! Such a creative block deserves a creative name (I'm stumped!)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Flowers and Stars would be a great name
Love the Quilt and want to say Thank YOu for a chance to win!

    ReplyDelete
  41. The quilt looks beautiful. I would name it Fancy Gears. It is hard to think of the border, a plain one would be too plain , maybe a scalloped border.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love the scrappiness. It reminded me of wildflowers bursting into spring, so I would call it something like "Burst of Blossoms."

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ooh, neat block. I see lots of possibilities for this...

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think I might name it "the wheels are turning" --- the block has so much motion. It takes time to just figure out how to piece it --- great job!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Flower Mosaic. Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  46. How about 'mesquita'???

    ReplyDelete
  47. Anonymous04 May, 2011

I truly like this design! I've long admired Islamic tiling patterns and this particular one, specifically. :) How about Khanam's Starry Lattice?

    :) Linda

    ReplyDelete
  48. How about Floral Splash for a name? It's a lovely block.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh my gosh! I love this block. What a great quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  50. The quilt reminds me of one that used to be on my grandmother's bed...not exactly like it but it makes me think of simpler days gone by. I see the seconday diamonds when the blocks are put together so Khanam in the Sky with Diamonds would be my name for it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Star gazing would be my choice

    ReplyDelete
  52. How about Radiating Diamonds? I love the way it splashes out from the center!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Cinzia,
How about Continuum. I know that Khanam will love your Surprise! Sandi
Tell me is this paper pieced?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Awesome quilt! How about Star Burst? When I look at it I really focus on the center of the block.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I really like your block and your quilt looks beautiful. How about twirlygig? I'm not good at naming things!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Love the block. I see stars, so I would name it star light, star bright.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Your design is so unique. A simple border would be the perfect frame.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Love your block. How about Wheels in Motion.
    Patti Sha

    ReplyDelete
  59. Lovely block - I'd call it Star Burst :D

    ReplyDelete
  60. What a beautiful design! It looks so complicated. I can't wait to see how it goes together. I'd say Cartwheels.

    ReplyDelete
  61. It's an amazing looking block, Cinzia. I really like the overall effect. Call it "Little Cog in a Big Wheel."

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anonymous04 May, 2011

"Interesting block", I thought at first. Couldn't see where it was going until I saw you quilt blocks together! Then it just exploded. How about the name Enlightened.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I like the block, and the name you picked. As for borders, I would say something really simple to frame the blocks. Love the secondary design where the block corners meet! Cool when that happens.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I love the secondary patterns! Amazing. I'd call it Kaleiscope Jewels

    ReplyDelete
  65. I love the secondary patterns! I would call it Kaleidoscope Jewels

    ReplyDelete
  66. With all the reds, whites and blues and stars, it looks very "old timey" patriotic. The quilt reminds me of one that would be hung over a white wicker chair on a front porch for the 4th of July.

So my name idea is: Front Porch July Forth!

Thanks for making me think today!

    Mel Meister
    Deltona, Florida

    ReplyDelete
  67. I absolutely love your block - the prettiest one I've seen so far. I would call it Starburst.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I love the secondary pattern that shows up, the stars in the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Very neat block, it reminded me of windmills, 'Blowing In The Wind' maybe? Could be done in blues and whites. Congrats on making the magazine and thanks much!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Love the block. There's so much motion in the quilt, that I would make a very simple border to give the eye a place to rest. Thanks for the giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Wow! What a great block! I would call it Mosaic Star. Thanks for sharing your lovely quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I would call it Kaleidoscope!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I think it looks neat without a border. I'd just make enough blocks to make it big enough:) Great block!

    ReplyDelete
  74. looking at your quilt brought to mind my "Dizzy Daze" the days I have had lately. Havent we all had them?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Petals and Gears I think would be a great name! thanks and congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Anonymous04 May, 2011

"Star Cogs" would be a good name. or COG STARS, I like how you can see a different pattern within.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I like your quilt - but can't figure out how I'd finish it.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I have had your quilt up on my computer screen looking at it. Here is an idea that may or may not work but here goes. Take the lighter colors and make a one and a half inch inner border framing the entire top. Take the darker colors and randomly in large sections sew them together mitering the corners for the border. Thanks for the chance at the mag.

    ReplyDelete
  79. That quilt is such a beauty! Love the secondary designs that come by putting the blocks together. I would probably use a plain colored border with maybe some pinwheel-type flowers on a vine surrounding it on opposite sides, tying in with the pinwheels on the inside. Can't wait to see your block in the magazine.

    ReplyDelete
  80. 1. Khanam's Stars
    2. A border incorporating the star points would be beautiful.

I hope the directions are included in the magazine.

    ReplyDelete
  81. For some reason, "Star Flowers" comes to mind when looking at your quilt - it is so "moving"! Whatever you end up naming it, it is very pretty! Congrats on getting another block in the magazine! HUGS... and stitches

    ReplyDelete
  82. Wonderful block and quilt. If I am seeing the colors right, I would go with the dark blue as a border. The first thing I thought when I saw them was wagon wheels, so maybe Settler's Spokes?

    Debbie

    ReplyDelete
  83. I absolutely love this block--and the quilt. The geometrics and symmetry are just exquisite. Congratulations on your achievement.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I have to say I am TERRIBLE but at naming quilts but it is very complex...love it!

    ReplyDelete
  85. I agree with Patty D. that it reminds me of gears. It is a beautiful block. Thanks for the giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Reminds me of Chrome Mag Wheel car rims spinning. So...how about "Khanam's Spin"?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Something about this quilt pattern makes me think of Dandelions... so pretty. You definitely want to keep that border simply so as not to distract from the glorious design!
    sunshdws@yahoo.com

    ReplyDelete
  88. This block makes me think of dandelions. Dandelion Daydreams, perhaps. A sweet, simple block would be perfect - you sure don't want to distract from that glorious design!
    sunshdws@yahoo.com

    ReplyDelete
  89. I absolutely love your quilt! I don't think I would put any borders on it. Now I have to find the magazine so I can try out your block!
    Karen in Breezy Point

  90. Your block is awesome! I love it.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Anonymous04 May, 2011

Good use of color. Nice design.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Beautiful block and I love the secondary patterns in the quilt. I think the blocks stand alone quite nicely and would leave off the border or, maybe just a 2" plain border to end it. Nice job!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Stone werks...I love this block, my fav so far..would look so good with American Jane fabrics! Lisa in Texas

    ReplyDelete
  94. Wow, what an amazing block! I would probably go with a simple border set - maybe a narrow inner border of a dark fabric, and a wider border of the lighter print. I think if you added a pieced border, it would be a little too busy.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I would use a black solid border to make teh wheels stop:) Great block to use up scraps!!!

    ReplyDelete
  96. i think this is the best block ive seen yet simply love it. im not good on borders so i cant help you out

    ReplyDelete
  97. The block is beautiful and reminds me of a beautiful floor you would see in a church. No help with the name, sorry. The quilt has a lot of motion, so I would use a plain matching border, somewhere for your eyes to rest.

    ReplyDelete
  98. What an interesting block. I'm not sure I have enough experience to try it yet, but if I win the book I'll have the pattern when I am ready - LOL. Thanks for the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Wow!! I love this block. It looks amazing. Thanks for sharing. Hugs Ariane

    ReplyDelete
  100. Anonymous04 May, 2011

The block is stunning. It reminds me of Faceless clocks.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Man, you make me think hard! I think naming it after Khanam is a great idea. But that's as far as I got! Khanam's Kiss, Khanam's Drum Circle... Beautiful block!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Flower POW-er--the images just pop.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I envision an inner thin border of repeated dark elongated diamonds like the ones formed at the center of the intersection of each pair of blocks. Does that make sense?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Blooming Stars. I see both flowers and stars in the quilt! The blocks looks difficult to make, and it will be fun to see how it is put together when the magazine gets out!

    ReplyDelete
  105. My DH thinks this quilt looks like Country Wild Flowers. My son says it should be called Star Flowers and I say Celestial Flowers or perhaps Celestials Blooms, yeah, the latter.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Oh my gosh! I just LOVE the quilt made using your block. It's awesome! I am horrible at naming things, thus my cat who ended up with the name Baby given that's what we called him while deciding on a name. It took so long I couldn't bear to change it since he was already running to me when I called him Baby. LOL

Anyway, the first thing I thought of when I saw the full quilt created with the block was daisies or flowers. But looking closer it doesn't look like that at all so my name for your quilt would be Hidden Flowers (or Daisies)

    ReplyDelete
  107. Oh my goodness I can see this using my scraps!! Wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  108. I like this block which looks like circles without any curved piecing. Since it looks like circles, I think the border should be something simple.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I would call your quilt Star in the Round.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Stars and Swirls. Although a play on Spokes could be fun as well - the circles remind me of bicycle wheel spokes for some reason. :)

    ReplyDelete
  111. Maybe Spinner. It looks like the blocks are spinning....a little anyway...grin...or maybe it's me.

    ReplyDelete
  112. The quilt is beautiful and it is a fabulous block! The quilt reminds me of a constellation or the night sky or a star cluster. I have been making a lot of quilts lately without borders. Maybe consider that?

    ReplyDelete
  113. The Quilt has cools stars in the secondary pattern. Great block to name after someone you know. Thansk for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Christina04 May, 2011

Great block. Thank you! Looking forward to seeing the whole issue.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I see a solid border with a vine full of appliqued flowers. I just LOVE your quilt-- it has so much movement!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Your block is very interesting. I would go simple for the border. Small diamonds using the your smallest diamond variation with long strips. Name: Galaxy Shine.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Just beautiful,
"Jacob's Circle of Life" as in Jacobs Coat of Many Colors...

    ReplyDelete
  118. Daisy Dance... love it :o)

    ReplyDelete
  119. Beautiful top! I would call the quilt Persian Flower Garden. (Or Dreams of Persia, but I like the other name better for the play on Grandmother's Flower Garden.) For a border, I would have a double border...the inner would be the dark fabric (or close) from the quilt, and the outer border (same width as the inner, neither extremely wide) would use scraps from the flower petals.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I love your block. I would do a plain border with a simple motif in each corner at most. Maybe an eight pointed star to reference the star in the petals. An intricate border would detract from the beauty of the blocks, in my opinion. Thanks for the giveaway and congratulations on being chosen for the magazine.

    jennhgray@gmail.com

    ReplyDelete
  121. The wheel design of the block looks like slices of pineapple. So I think the quilt should be called pineapple unside down cake. The borders should be a soft butterscotch yellow and binding in a warm chocolate brown.
Thanks for the chance to win.

    sew.goodwitch_crafts@yahoo.com

    ReplyDelete
  122. Wonderful block. Perhaps "Girlfriend" or "Buttonmaker Wheel" as looks like the little wheel on my sewing machine buttonhole maker.
sawtooth border in two colors with darkest dark and a light

Gears, for a name. Lovely block.

  124. I always struggle to name my quilts so I'm not much help. Your block is very nice and unusual. Congrats on being chosen for the magazine.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Based on the block name and my impression of stars and flowers, I would call the quilt Star Blossom Surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I'm not good at naming quilts so I'll pass on that one. I think that this is a quilt that doesn't need a border. Thanks for the chance to win the magazine.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I would call it
"Marriage of the Wheels & Stars"
As far as a border. I say simple you don't want to loose the wheels and stars.

    ReplyDelete
  128. How about the name "Round and Round We Go"

    ReplyDelete
  129. I don't know that I'd put a border on that quilt...it might destract from the pattern of the blocks...perhaps just the binding in a dark color to act as a frame?
    Thank you...and congratulations!

    ReplyDelete
  131. I would think a dark 1, 1 1/2, or 2 inch border would be great for this quilt!!

    ReplyDelete
  132. the quilt calls for a very simple or plain border so as not to distract from the quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Your block is beautiful, and I love the quilt! It reminds me of wildflowers!

    ReplyDelete
  134. I would name it the star house quilt block.

    ReplyDelete
  135. My thought was "Happy Go Lucky", but I like some of the other suggestions much better, such as Watch Works and Cartwheel Crazy...you have very creative readers.

    wordygirl at earthlink dot net

    ReplyDelete
  136. It looks a bit like biscuits but maybe waterwheel is more descriptive.

    ReplyDelete
  137. looks good. thanks for the chance to win a copy of the mag

    ReplyDelete
  138. I would do a combination of borders - a solid, then maybe something simple like a soldier course or a rail fence, then another solid.

And I have to say I like the suggestion from Patty D from NC "Watch Works". I was thinking something with gears but also saw the stars in the background. Very nice effect.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Re: border ideas. What about Prairie Points?

    ReplyDelete
  140. My favorite, favorite block so far. So intricate, so may possibilties, "Circle of Life"

    ReplyDelete
  141. Good evening...
Amazing is all that I can say... way beyond my skills but wonderful to look at.
How about Khanam Mystery for the name.

  142. What a unique dynamic block! Thanks so much for sharing!
    Judy

    ReplyDelete
  143. I love the movement in your block. For some reason, I thought of playing cards when I saw it. Maybe a name like Sleight of Hand?

    ReplyDelete
  144. Beatiful! I love the secondary patterns that show. How about Stars Within Stars Within

    ReplyDelete
  145. Well, what's wrong with the name Khanam's Surprise? I think it's fabulous and quite an honor to your son's girlfriend!
If I must have an opinion, then, how about Kismet? the interconnectedness has an ethereal feel to it!
A black border would be my choice--a frame for the beauty and absolutely nothing to take my eye away from its design.
    loveitloveitloveit!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Your quilt looks quite busy to me; I would either make a simple small border with one of the colors from the block or I would just bind it without a border on it.

    ReplyDelete
  147. how about Kalidescope? I would say Ferris Wheel but I noticed it was already mentioned. It's beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Beautiful block. It immediately made me think of cartwheels, so I would call it Khanam's Cartwheels.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Maybe the name of your quilt should include an homage to your machine's casualty, and name it "Pedal"monium

    ReplyDelete
  150. I would call it Khanam's Garden of Suprises.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I haven't finished my first quilt yet and I wouldn't know where to start putting a border on something so complex but I would suggest peicing it to a straigt simple edge to frame the design and make it the focus. Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  152. This is the third post but rather than just leaving my name I wanted to let you know how beautiful this quilt is. Your son's girlfriend is very lucky. You are obviously very fond of her.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Very interesting block. I don't think you want anything too fussy for the border. Maybe a 1" dark border first to set it off & then just some 4-6" rectangles (vertical on the sides & horizontal on the top & bottom)from the quilts fabrics. Thanks for the chance to win the magazine.

    ReplyDelete
  154. It looks like the tile floors in the churchs or cathedrals in England. Needs a pieced border of triangles. Title needs something like the Rest on Sunday!

    ReplyDelete
