Yes here it is my block from volume 4 of Quiltmakers 100 Blocks, Yvonne's Mystery. Yvonne is one of my students who after making several of my quilt designs wanted to make of Flying Geese. Figuring this was too easy for her I offered to design her a quilt which incorporated the Flying Geese.
Her first lesson was paper piecing of Wild Goose Chase, which is simply four rows of Flying Geese all flying into the middle or out to the corners of a block which is placed on the diagonal.
After successfully completing those blocks I then showed her the next part of the design. Although I had planned it to be as per my block Yvonne preferred more blue in her design and so we changed some of the value placements, resulting in a more traditional Feathered Star. Next was the simple sashing and the cornerstones of nine patch were Margaret's idea.

Wow. I love this block. I just took my first quilting class in the past two months and was afraid of the flying geese blocks. Everyone says how horrible they are and I just LOVED them. Every point on mine matched perfectly with my very first one so I was thrilled after reading how hard that was. This block is awesome.

ReplyDeleteYvonne pulled off her quilt perfectly. Yes she's brave to tackle a feathered star just three years into quilting. Isn't it fun when those around us brainstorm to create such wonderful projects. I've only made one feather star to date, but hope to have another opportunity. I'll be sure to consider my Volume 4 for your Yvonne' Mystery design. My guess for Volume 5 submittal is February 15, 2011. Sandi
ReplyDeleteHow would you quilt this block? Have just finished one as an individual block and am wondering the best way to quilt it.
ReplyDeleteI would love to say that I would put fancy feathers in the plain areas but alas I am not a very good quilter, well not a machine quilter anyway.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to quilt this by hand I would make a feature of the plain area and like I said either place a feather in the plain areas or echo quilt it to enhance the star. Love to see what you do with it though.
